You may wonder how it is that a campus-community radio station would need to raise $130,000 on top of our student levy and meagre advertsing revenue. The answer is simple. Things wear out. Sometimes really big things. This year it is our broadcast. consoles are failing.. To say they are venerable is perhaps an understatement. They have waaaaay outlived their "stale dates". No longer is it la question of "will they fail?" but an inevitable "when will they fail?" We can't bring you great music without the equipment to do it. Without boards there is no CKCU-FM. And because they have explained it far better than we ever could, please read the message we received from our manager, Matthew Crosier and funding drive coordinator, Janice Lockwood, about this dire - but fixable - situation. New Consoles at CKCU-FMCKCU-FM is making a big investment in its future. It has purchased three Wheatstone digital broadcast consoles. They will soon be installed in the on-air, production and Closed Circuit studios.
The new boards will replace the 29 year-old McCurdy consoles in the on-air and production studios, and the 13 year-old Ward-Beck console in the Closed Circuit studio. Purchasing new boards is a step CKCU has been forced to take. It is not a question of whether CKCU’s old consoles will fail. It is merely a question of when. The McCurdy boards have lasted much longer than their expected lifetime. They have been repaired many times. Replacement parts are no longer available because McCurdy stopped making consoles in the mid-1990s. For many years CKCU’s engineers sourced spare parts from other radio stations who were retiring their McCurdy consoles. That source has now dried up. The Ward-Beck board in Closed Circuit was installed in 2001. It has reached the end of its expected lifetime. Ward-Beck stopped making consoles in 2012 and next year they will stop making spare parts. CKCU’s engineering team recommended that CKCU replace all three broadcast consoles at the same time. That way, show hosts can easily be trained on the new equipment, and they won’t confront unfamiliar equipment when working in any of CKCU’s studios. After looking at the options, CKCU’s engineer recommended that the station purchase and install three Wheatstone digital boards. It will cost approximately $60,000. It is a lot of money. But it is a necessary and worthwhile investment in CKCU-FM’s future. Heid / Teho Majamäki ft. Ville valo

Show features include: 'Lusifer', a beguiling new single by Finnish multi-instrumentalist and percussion wizard, Teho Majamäki, from his coming album "Colours" featuring Ville Valo on vocals, Some very cool dark & metallish rock out of Copenhagen, Denmark. Forever Still, Front woman Maja Schønning has one hell of a compelling voice, sounding like Amy Lee (Evanescence) cut with Alissa White-Gluz (The Agonist). and cowrites their songs., And in hour 3, we feature some fierce pagan metal from Madrid, Spain: Heid and their 5-track release "Voces de la Tierra Dormida". Think of them as Spanish pirate metal., all dark growls and lilting folk instrumentation - including recorder, bandura, and violin as well as brutally beautiful execution of some solid metallic arrangements. \w/ -e.V.
Multi-instrumentalist & percussion virtuoso Teho Majamäki, who will be releasing the first single "Lusifer" (Lucifer) from his forthcoming so-far untitled album, next week. The song is in Finnish, the lyrics are by poet Aarnio Kovda. Ville Valo has the lead vocal and co-composed the song with Majamäki, & Samuli Laiho. Majamäki's coming album Colours which will be released on the 13th of February, 2015, by Finnish independent music publisher & indie record label Exogenic Music Group.
"'Lusifer' originated in a final evening studio session last autumn, just before packing up our instruments." Majamäki told online Finnish music magazine Rumba, in an exclusive interview.. "It's fantastic that this atmospheric 'last night' became the first single album." The percussionist told the Finnish music outlet that making the album has involved many of his friends and music pros, and that he is "grateful to all involved pedestrians. The album will feature a number of great artists, starting with Ville Valo on the first single release.." Rumba says that Valo discovered that the song perfectly suited the text of Aarnio Kovda's 1904 poem "Lucifer's Harp. " Listen to the song on Rumba's web.space @ the bottom of the page. Castle Skull & Bones has been embroiled in a variety of crises, .such as e.V.'s battle with a 2 headed hydra aka the headcold from hell. This mutated into a wicked (not in a good way) flu. As well, the Castle has been under heavy bombardment. But now, mercifully, it appears that the smoke may be clearing and a light be visible at the end of the proverbial tunnel (and here's to hoping it's not an oncoming train! ;) . And so dear listeners there is finally time to post links to the past few shows.
TRUE NORTH STRONG & FREE! hour 3 feature: Agalloch's new album The Serpent & The Sphere
You want to hit it big and there are lots of people willing to make you think they will help you make your dreams come true... If you are looking to get your music to the music publishers and sync agents please don't become easy pickings for con men/women. There are slimeballs in the music pool looking for unaware wide eyed dreamers to rip off. DON'T FEED THE SHARKS!
Be careful out there! ;-) <3 \w/ -evie I can't say enough good things about the superlative vocals & superb writing of the first 2 featured bands, Saturnus and Frostbite. This show features both band's 2nd long-play albums. If you're into dark melancholic beauty, cut with some bleak harshness, you've come to the right place. LISTEN ON DEMAND!
GOTHIC HACIENDAEver wonder what sort of house Tool, Pucifer and A Perfect Circle's frontman, Maynard James Keenan might live in? or how he might decorate a place? Wonder no longer! Metal Injection's "Heavy Metal Real Estate" shows you what Metal Insider has called "insane" and another media outlet called "Mediterranean". One outlet cruelly dubbed it "hideous", I disagree. Even though I seriously doubt I could handle living there, as it's intense very, it's hardly hideous. It's alright - if you like Gaudi, haciendas, bold design, eye popping colours, and wild patterns of light scattered over the walls and things on the baroque, rococo and Spanish end of the design pond, you may well love it. (The blue in the bedroom is actually hella cool!) WHEN METAL DOESN'T PAY THE RENTMost metal musicians would agree, that being a metal musician rarely pays the bills. So you might take a side job to make ends meet. Guess what Kittie's drummer, Mercedes Lander, does? Sell Real Estate! Here is her FB business page.
